According to Bloomberg News, Reuters, and other sources, Snap will require employees to work from the office 80% of the time beginning at the end of February. What should we read into this?

A Snap spokesperson said, "After working remotely for so long, we're excited to get everyone back together next year with our new 80/20 hybrid model."

Why now?

Snap is a giant online digital tech employer. With the recent layoffs by other big tech firms, you have to wonder about the timing. This could absolutely be a situation where Snap leadership feels the organization will be happier and more productive when back together in the office environment in a hybrid model.

On the other hand, Snap also announced in Q3 2022 that they would be laying off 20% of all staff to cut costs. Snap's revenue is very dependent on online ad revenue, which has been down significantly. This is at least part of the reason for layoffs at Twitter and Meta as well.

Could this be a move to reduce headcount further through attrition, by losing folks who don't want to deal with a hybrid some-office-some-home approach?

We just don't know.

What should this mean for software developers?

Twitter, Meta, Facebook, Snap... Should you be seeing big clues in these recent events and making adjustments to your career goals?

As I've said before - NO.

The software engineering industry is super healthy, despite the overall economy and more specifically online ad revenue being down. Developer demand is still increasing.

Competition May Go Up

Yes, assume there will be more competition for jobs. Yes, assume the overall software engineer skill level may creep up. But as I've also said before, you should also assume that churn going out the top will also be leading to churn coming in the bottom. That means new job opportunities.

Have a Plan

So have a plan! Set some goals, build a career path around that, learn the skills you need, and move forward with confidence!

We will CONTINUE to watch and see who's next...
